Since 2016, Prof Dr Suzanne S. Schüttemeyer has built up the Institute for Parliamentary Research with tireless commitment and visionary foresight. Especially after her retirement as an emeritus professor in autumn 2018, she has succeeded in turning a young research institute into a centre for practice-oriented, academically-sound research on parliamentarism. At the same time, she ensured that the IParl quickly gained public recognition and a good reputation.
Based on an unparalleled understanding of the merits and processes of parliamentary representation, her passion has always been for a type of empirical research that aims at explaining the complexities of parliamentary democracy while having a close connection to practitioners. - In this respect, Suzanne S. Schüttemeyer is not only distinguished by her academic excellence, but also by her great service to representative democracy.
Her sensitive commitment to the people at the Institute has also been formative. With warmth and cordiality, she created an environment in which everyone felt comfortable and was able to grow both personally and professionally.
Suzanne S. Schüttemeyer retired from the institute at the end of 2024. Her commitment to research that is close to reality and practice will continue to be a legacy and an aspiration for the IParl.
On behalf of the IParl team and the Foundation for Science and Democracy, we would like to thank Suzanne S. Schüttemeyer from the bottom of our hearts for her outstanding achievements and lasting merits.
