IParl project "The candidate line-up and its time"

The project builds on the surveys and findings of the IParl project on the candidate line-up for the 2017 Bundestag elections. The aim of the project at the time was to research the positioning of the Bundestag candidates as precisely and comprehensively as possible.

The set-up project examines the temporal organisation of the constellation process in more detail in order to highlight internal party and geographical similarities and differences. Questions of time are questions of power and their impact should therefore not be underestimated. While analyses of temporal organisation have already been carried out for various government systems and parliaments, they are lacking for the pre-parliamentary and intra-party space. This is all the more astonishing as it is in the parties that the people are recruited who later receive parliamentary mandates and possibly government offices. The project aims to fill this research gap and clarify the following questions:

1. How is the process of nominating candidates in the constituency and at state level organised in terms of time?
2. Where are there differences in the temporal organisation of the constellation process and how are these distributed between the parties and regions?
3. What are the (power-political) consequences of temporal changes over time?
4. What impact did the election of the new Bundestag have on the constellation process?

To answer these and other questions, semi-structured guided interviews will be conducted in the constituency and at district and state level with party members who are particularly involved in the candidate nomination process. In addition, a standardised online survey is planned in Berlin and Brandenburg.
