In the state election campaigns in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, East German identity also played a role. As studies show, East Germans hold very few leadership positions in relation to their share of the population - even in the
new federal states themselves. This Focus analyses whether this also applies to the candidates standing for election. Are East Germans over- or under-represented among the candidates from the perspective of proportional representation - i.e. descriptively? How has this developed over time? And is the attribution "East German party" also reflected in the candidate portfolio?
